The official name of the island is Thira, but it is better known by the name
given in honor of the island’s patron saint, St. Irene of Thessaloniki, who
died here while in exile in 304 A.D.
The fury of nature has left its marks on the island, the home of Greece’s last
active volcano which smolders still today and the largest caldera on earth.
The entire center of the circular island sank into the sea during the tremendous
volcanic explosion of 3,500 years ago leaving a large crescent shaped island
enclosing the vast. Some Scholars believe that Santorini is part of the
legendary lost continent of Atlantis which supposedly slipped under water during
the disaster.
The rich volcanic soil of Santorini combined with the abundance of sun and
humidity at night is ideal for producing the 36 varieties of both red and white
wine which is well-respected throughout the world. The same ingredients also
produce a popular small, sweet tomato, mostly for local consumption and small,
flavorful pistachio nuts. In addition to wine, other exports include pumice stone.
On the southern end of Santorini is the quiet village of Akrotiri with its
spectacular views of the Port of Athinios and the cliff top villages of Fira,
and Oia. The road leads further to lighthouse of Faros and beyond the village is
the ancient excavation site which dates back to 3000 B.C.
It is this part of the
island where our villas are located with
views of the sea in all directions.
